After my tutorial with Ben I started to re-work the images that I had already drawn, in order to make the colouring process a little easier.
I can't believe how much better these look. I feel instantly happy with this work, when Ive been pondering my other stuff for weeks now.
I think that by doing my finals and my work in this style from now on will really build and enhance my portfolio, and show a little more professionalism in its coherency.
My styles have always been varied, and I can keep that experimentation going in my sketchbooks, but if I aim to complete my illustrations in this way I think I would make myself a little more recognisable.
This work stands out, it's bright but still tells a story.
These need a little work, but Im just trying to get used to working in this way again.
Things to consider-
-Stock for the book. Yes this imagery is bright, and I wanted to create nostalgia in my images, but I think if I print onto recycled, off white paper this should create that effect. Good stock for the book is really important. Need to go and source.
- This imagery will work so much better when transferred onto fabric. I will be dispersing my work onto material for fmp, for a few reasons but I will explain in another post.
- I could work in this way for quite some time, just changing the colour palettes. Im glad Ive finally found a palette that works really well for now though. One of my aims this year was to get better at colour, and I feel like I can tick that off, which is a good feeling.
- Negative space works in my favour when using such bold colours, but I need to find the balance. Keep practicing.
