Tutorial with Teresa

I had a really great tutorial with Teresa today, and I expressed how I was feeling about everything. I was happy with the tea idea, and drawing the animals, but the whole story of Journey to the West was something that was getting to me a little bit, and i was struggling to pick out other characters or scenes. Everything is so far fetched that I couldn't pin point certain parts. I would find myself reading more and more of the story in order to get somewhere, but would get no where and waste time in the process.

I was able to talk of these concerns through with Teresa and we came up with an alternative option that is definitely achievable.
Because I've already got some of the animal designs, and thats whats working well for me, we discussed the possibility of changing the theme to the Chinese Zodiac.

With the pig and the monkey that I had already worked on, I was half way there. Because its the year of the fire monkey, this could make the tea set easier to promote and more collectable when applied. I know its late in the game to change my idea, but I just can't keep working on something I don't enjoy, and this seems more exciting to me. I have some work, i just need to make more.

Moving forward-

- Research the Chinese Zodiac
- Decide on 2 more animals form this.
- Edit the monkey to look more like the pig
- Start applying.
- Research into product and packaging, especially in tea
- REWRITE PROPOSAL.

Refined designs (Gouache)

I was encouraged to buy some gouache the other day, and have never really used it before, so thought id give it a go. Absolutely love it. My aim is to create an image for each set (4 or 5 sets in total) like this, and then one line and block colour for each. Im pretty happy with these, I just need to see what they look like when they're applied now.

The only thing I'm really struggling with is another character to illustrate. The book is so so complex that I'm struggling massively to understand what character does what etc

I will discuss this with Teresa in my tutorial this week, and hopefully find a solution.

Peer review

This was the most useful peer review yet. Probably because I had a little more personal direction than all of the previous peer reviews.
It was agreed that I go with the tea idea, and choose a few designs and work them into various places.
Keep it simple and get on with it now.

More roughs and Ideas

So with the tea idea in mind I felt like i had a direction and something to work towards finally!
I started developing roughs and thinking about how this could be best executed.
With this idea in mind I was working more towards product and packaging rather than object & Environment, and my whole idea was very different to when I started, which means I really need to re write my project proposal.

Ive taken on board the simple line work with the blocks of colour, which I want to refine. Pretty happy with the pig.

I tried applying one of the designs to a Chinese tea cup. I though it could be a good idea to continue the image out of the tea cup, but not too sure about it now that its something visual.
Need to keep refining designs and see how best they are applied.

Roughs & Application

Been trying lots of different techniques when it comes to image making, just to see if a certain method sparks a bit more interest.
Im finding to so difficult to concentrate on this module when there's so much on at the same time. Like Cop, because I'm really enjoying Cop, I want to give it more of my time, which isn't a good thing at all. Its my own fault for not managing my time more effectively.

Starting to get some roughs that Im happy with however, and starting to form some ideas that could work effectively.
For now I'm getting character designs done, and in the process thinking about where this can be applied.

My thought process now, is to take this novel, and apply it in the world of Chinese tea. I know quite a lot about loose leaf teas, and most of them originate from China, so its essentially taking two old traditional things from China and combining them into a set/collection.

The set could include-

- Chinese Tea cups
- Bags for the loose leaf tea
- Small cards with a character on each, brief description of the character on one side, and assign that character to a specific tea, with info of the tea on the other side.
- Specially design tea strainer

Megacrit, development & Problems

Over Easter I researched into the book, and stated making roughs whilst trying to understand the book. I don't think I realised the complexity of the book when I started with it, and now I'm not sure yet again if I've chosen the right thing to do. Everything seems to be going wrong and I'm not enjoying myself at all.

I quite liked making some of the roughs for Journey to the West, probably because i love drawing animals, especially if they're wearing clothes.
Im finding it difficult to understand the story as well as make work at the same time, so I've stared to write on each page so as to get facts and images in one. The story is so all over the place that it feels like its taking me ages to get anywhere.

The comments from this megacrit were really nice, but not really anything helpful or what I didn't already know. The last comment is probably the best, what context? I still don't know and I'm starting to panic now.

I finally got my ceramics back too, and half of them have disappeared, so all of that work and time I put into making them seems to be completely wasted, which Im quite upset about.
However, there's no time to be upset, need to get on with this as I still feel as lost as when I started.

OUIL503 End of Module Evaluation

For me, Responsive was by far the most challenging module on this course yet. Not only because of the numerous deadlines and specifications to constantly be checking, but because it also had the added element of working within a group in response to a brief.

I learnt many valuable lessons from our time collaborating, especially since I was in such a large group, working along side two fellow illustrators and one animator. During the Pitcha Pitcha, I was really hoping to work with a graphic designer, however it became apparent that each one of our team members had a certain skill set and worked in an alternative manner, and I would say that the skills of a graphic designer were definitely present.

It was great to work with others and to combine our styles, and it left us with an outcome that couldn’t have been achieved alone. Ideas and opinions were highly important when starting, and then developing these into imagery and finals was a really interesting experience. Although I worked with two other illustrators, we each had a completely individual style and approach, which was then brought to life by our animator. It was a great process to be a part of, and its made me realise that I can work well in a group, and I can communicate well with others.

The importance of communication is now something I value greatly when working within a group. The team I was in communicated on a daily basis in order to get things done. Looking back, however, communication isn’t the only important element, but also voicing my own opinions. At times, when working on the Shutterstock brief, I didn’t feel as involved as I would have liked, but I was too scared to speak up until it became a little too much, and when I finally did, all of my problems were resolved. Self confidence and a voice are two great key skills I have taken away from our collaboration.

My individual briefs taught me completely different things about myself and my practice which I will value as an illustrator for the rest of my life.

Illustration Friday was a great warm up for me when starting the module, and taught me how to create work at a faster pace, with a brief a week being a quick turn around. I did a few of these just to get the feel for how live competitions work, however other than creating work to a deadline, it didn’t teach me much because the interpretation to the words was so open for exploration, and there weren’t any specifications other than to post your response to the word on the page. Which is why I stopped and started to tackle briefs with a little more body to them.

The Leeds College of Art Christmas card brief had a few specifications to meet as well as a close deadline, which is why I went on to undertake this brief next. I forced myself out of my comfort zone as best I could during this module, because I know I am capable, I just have a tendency to tell myself I can’t do certain things. That’s why, I chose to work a little more digitally for this particular brief. I was pleased with the outcome of my digitally coloured Christmas card, and in completing it, gained a little more confidence to work digitally more often. I know myself, and I’m starting to know where my passion within my practice lies, but its still a good idea for me to gain these skills while I have all of the facilities right in front of me.

Completing all of the Secret 7’s was by far the most enjoyable part of this module for me. It gave me free reign to explore numerous media and methods within my practice, while still working to certain size specifications and deadlines. It was during the period of completing each one of these that I learnt how important time management is. Not just working to a deadline, but to my own personal schedule. If a vinyl cover took me a little longer than intended, I would have to rethink the next, whether it be to simplify it in order to finish, or to swap my work load around. Understanding my own time and my capabilities within an allotted period was a lesson that will be beneficial to my practice in the future.
Using different methods to create images took me back to my first year visual language module, and has reaffirmed my love for using a variety of styles within my work. It also gave me the opportunity to see where my strengths lie, and where improvements need to be made within my work.
Getting a design in to this years Secret 7 was a really important achievement for me. It boosted my self belief and self confidence, which at times I lack greatly.

I took on board what worked well for me in Secret 7, and went on to work with more shape completing the Feathr wallpaper brief. Shape is definitely something I want to keep pushing forward in my practice, and explore its possibilities.

Overall, this module has been extremely challenging, but has pushed my creative practice in ways that I didn’t think possible. Collaborating with others was, at times, extremely difficult, but has left me with the confidence to voice my opinions, understanding the importance of communicating and generally how to work professionally along side my peers. My individual practice has come along way, throwing me out of my comfort zone has definitely benefitted my practice in ways that I will value from now on.

Shutterstock 30 second video

Making this 30 second video of our process throughout the Shutterstock brief with Chay was pretty difficult. The hard part was trying to fit that much work and information into such a short space of time. It was also challenging because Chay and I aren't the best on after effects. But in working together, we taught and learnt things from and to one another, which was a really valuable part of the collaboration for me.
We weren't feeling completely involved due to our limited skills on the programme, but we forced ourselves to be more involved and managed to do it, which is something I will be taking away from this collaboration. That you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and you can only get better with practice, rather than being fearful and not even attempting.

Secret 7 exhibition

Unfortunately I couldn't make it down to London to see this for myself, but luckily my brother and his girlfriend went to check it out and sent me some photos.
Mine's right in the middle! Its such a lovely feeling to have my work on display at Sonos Studios in London, to be viewed by hundreds of people. I really feel like I've achieved something.

Final animations for Shutterstock

Here is our completed animation show reel. All of our hard work eventually paid off and we were left with 3 beautiful short animations that each tell their own individual story in relation to the titles chosen.

Ive learnt so much from working in a group, from the importance of communicating to the harsh reality of the professional world. I have taken on board each positive and negative thing and made myself learn from the whole experience.

Main things I have learnt -

- To voice my own opinions. The collaboration was indeed a good one, working along side extremely talented individuals. But I needed to be stronger as a person a little more, and communicate what I wasn't happy with at times.

- Although collaborating is difficult, it is also extremely rewarding, and i wouldn't have been able to achieve any of the things we have if I had done this on my own.

- Communication is extremely important. Ideas take longer to form when everyone has individual approaches, but its important to meet regularly and communicate daily to work through them.

- The importance of storyboards during this particular brief helped for the other members to visualise your ideas and progress onto the next stage.

- To turn negative thoughts into valuable lessons.

Shutterstock collaborative boards

I put these together while the guys were finishing off the animations. Work load was being shared out much better at the end. Making these made me realise how much fantastic work went into each animation, the group did real good.

Journey to the West research

After my tutorial with Ben I came away and started to research the book. I started on 50 watts website which Ben told me about, its awesome! Found some beautiful illustrations there as shown here.

I really love the mix of block colours and simple lines, and is something i would like to incorporate into my own work.

Ive read the start of Journey to the West, but didn't realise that its an actual novel. A huge novel. Ive got the gist of it, but need to read more about the book.

To do-

- Gather more info on the book
- Make some images from the book

- Think about where this can be applied, whether or not i will be telling a story or just illustarting characters etc

FEATHR SUBMISSION

Here is my submitted design for feathr, which I am really pleased with.
My aim was to create something bright and full of life, that would make a room light up. For one to be happy when entering. I think I have achieved these things. It seems to be one of the brightest designs on the website which is what I wanted.

Achieved -

- Successful bright colours
- Large shapes and simple lines work well
- A wallpaper that could work in any room of the house

Things to take away -

- Shape is exciting and can be used in many different ways. Explore this some more.
- When ideas aren't there to start, just go for it. Something great can come from the unknown.
- I like the thought of my design existing in a space. Find some more competitions like this.

Feathr possibilities

After making a few into repeat patterns I decided the one above worked best. It seemed to flow much better and the design started to stand out a lot more next to the rest for me.

I tried all of the others, and even tried adding elements of others into the one that worked best, but I think started to over crowd the design, and I realised that leaving it be was more effective than over working it.

I quite like the two above, I think the little characters are best on these, I just need to work out a way that they would flow a bit better. The current design after changing the offset on photoshop still looks tiled. Im really considering working on a few for this, because after looking at the website, I think I'm bringing something completely original to the wall.

Colour variations. Simple white and yellow was still the one for me though.

- Getting the hang of making quicker decisions.

Feathr Wallpaper Brief

Feathr was really exciting in that it was so open, but had to be something that people would want on their walls. I decided to work with paint to get going on this one, as I haven't in so long. Learning from the success of my Secret 7 that got through, I decided to work more with shape and its possibilities.

Creating work around the shapes was something I haven't done before, but seemed to come fluidly.

In future-
-Work with shape more often, it creates new and exciting outcomes within my practice.
- Just go with the flow when a certain single idea isn't present. Something will always come from putting pen to paper and ideas will form.

I think I have a good selection of designs to work with after spending an afternoon on these.

Artist Research- Mike Perry

After the success from Secret 7, and realising what worked well for me, I decided to do some research into illustrators that use shape within their work. Mike Perry was the one that shone through with his bold patterns and strange shapes.

Like the idea of making something like this myself, shapes underneath an illustration that sits on top but shows through.

What Mike Perry achieves and what I would like to-

Bright colours
-Bold shapes
-Interesting compositions
-Varied techniques with a similar outcome which creates a set/series
-Texture

Pretty sure I can take on board a few of these things as I start to create some designs for the feathr wallpaper brief.
