NAME

TILLY CATHERINE NAOMI BUTTERS

1.  What skills have you developed through this brief and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

During this module I have developed many new skills in areas I had never touched upon. Making a gif was something completely new to me, as was using Adobe Illustrator.
The gifs turned out to be really enjoyable, and the option to make your own images move is definitely a skill worth having. Creating characters and then considering movement was really useful in the development of the characters. Animating what they might do or say through repeated imagery meant you could bring your illustrations to life. It also meant that the final outcome was completely different to anything I’d done before.
Illustrator I found really difficult to use. But after a lot of practice, Im glad I know how to use it. Using illustrator forced me to think in shape more, which helped me to focus on visual symbols rather than detailed drawings. This, I feel I applied effectively throughout my final images.

2. What approaches to/methods of image making have you developed and how have they informed your concept development process?

Throughout this module I feel I have considered the design of my final outcomes a lot more. Making the gifs, I made sure I kept my ideas and illustrations simple in order to produce a vast number of drawings in a short space of time.
As with the ‘Greeting from’, it was important to keep the designs minimal in order to achieve the right outcome on illustrator. Working with shapes and symbols was definitely a new approach to image making for me, and it’s made me consider so many various methods in my day to day drawing in order to communicate through imagery.
During the ‘Persons of note’ brief, I tackled many problems with the layout and designs. Scamps and development helped in my battle massively, and informed the outcome of my finals.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths in this module for me came at the end, during the ‘Persons of note’ brief. Secondary research and a deeper understanding of the person I was illustrating helped me to realise what I wanted to achieve. I thought like a designer and spent a lot of time crafting the poster and making sure that they all worked well as a series of images.
The gifs were playful and really fun, and made me think about character in a way that I hadn't before. The development process of the gifs was something I felt was a strength for me, as my ideas changed quite a great deal throughout. I hope to continue to work out problems through repeated drawing in the future, as I have done during this module.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

My weaknesses during this module were mainly in the ‘Greetings from’ brief. My final images didn't work well as a set, and I should have considered design and layout much more than I did. I think I spent so much time trying to understand Adobe illustrator that I didn't have time to complete the images to the standard I would have liked. In the future I know to make images work as a set just by changing certain aspects, like the background for example. I think I took these problems on board when completing the final brief, as I made sure they all worked together.
At times I feel Im not decisive enough, and I spend a lot of time considering ideas rather than getting them down on paper. This is something I really need to work on, given that the time we have is often quite short.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Make sure I look at and study other practitioners work throughout the briefs were set. I felt I did this more so towards the end of the module and I feel my work benefited from it. It helped when tackling design problems and generally inspired me, and when I struggled with various elements it made me think about alternative ways I could approach my subject.

Be far more decisive when finalising ideas. A lot of the time I feel I just scamp and scamp and scamp, rather than push my ideas forward, I seem to bounce from one thing to the next. This will definitely benefit me towards the end of a project, and hopefully stop a build up of work.

Ask and seek opinion from others a little more. Often I am given really useful feedback and pointed in the direction of illustrators that I should study by my peers and fellow students. Its always very helpful and I should take advantage of the talented people around me while I have it.

Constantly ask myself questions about where the work is going or whether or not its what I want it to look like etc. If Im always aware of what I'm doing and why I'm doing it i think it would benefit me in reaching ideas at a faster pace, and give me more time to develop my final images.

Experiment with media a lot more during the first few weeks of development. This would inform the way i work quicker, whether it be small and intricate or large and playful. It would save me a lot of time and help me to develop my images further, rather than testing media towards the end and perhaps not achieving the outcome I had hoped for.

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Finals.

Here are my finals!

On the whole I'm actually quite happy with how these turned out. Im pleased with how far my ideas have come from start to finish, given that my initial final designs didn't work out well at all.
Making the images work collectively was also something I felt I managed well this time round, and was something that was touched upon for improvement during the last brief. Thinking like a designer completely changed the way I worked, and I managed to achieve the clean professional look I was after (I hope). Overall I'm pretty pleased, as I feel I addressed my previous problems and worked them out in module.

Areas for improvement:

  • I would have liked the polar bear postcard to go with the other two a little better. Perhaps with a little more hand made aesthetic, as i feel it looks too digital next to the others.
  • Developing ideas sooner would have also helped. I don't think i had any final ideas up until the last week, which meant i didn't have as much time on them as id have liked.

Changing the stamps.

Okay so my initial stamps looked like this. Which I really liked, but didn't think went with what i produced after them. Therefore i decided to add the ice to the stamps too. I cut a section on the ice out and made it into the background for the stamps. Wasn't too hard which i was really happy about as id run out of time before my print slot to do anything too complicated.
Now i feel that all of my images work as a set or series, which is usually something i don't manage to get right, so I'm pretty pleased.

Postcards.

I absolutely love photoshop. These were my original drawings ready for my finals. A whale next to Rans boat, a polar bear holding his ski's, and a penguin. I wanted to make the postcards go with the aesthetics of the poster, therefore i took the ice element from the poster and incorporated it into my postcards. Like this...

These two were practice ones, considering whether or not to include type in the postcards, and seeing if the idea for the design worked. I wasn't a fan of the type, i felt it was unnecessary on the postcards, and wanted to keep the type to the poster only. I was happy with the design though, so I went ahead with the others.

Polar bear i struggled with. White on white is so difficult! Im pleased with how this has come out in the end, however if i had more time i may have reconsidered the polar bear in order to suit the others. But they still work collectively given that the design is the same.

Final postcards

Really happy that they worked. I had my doubts. The only thing I'm thinking about now, is that my stamps don't really match my poster and postcards. May have to make some alterations. but on the whole for these, I'm pretty pleased.

Final poster.

Really pleased with the outcomes of these. Exactly the look I wanted, and I'm so happy i changed my idea while i still had time. I preferred the black and white one to the blue, so I'm going with that one, however i was advised to make him slightly bigger, which i have done, so heres the final poster...

Poster designs changing.

So this was the design I was going to work with at first, and incorporate the ice flying around him. However it just didn't work for me, and I wasn't happy with how it looked at all. It wasn't the clean and professional look I was aiming for, rather it looked like my a level work and I knew I could do better. I just needed to work harder on design and layout.
I decided to start working on white to achieve this. Still with pencil colours, and then the paint for the ice, so id had a lot of practice doing this.

I started looking at graphic design books just to get a better idea of composition.

Simple and minimalistic seems to work better for a clean outcome. Im even starting to consider type for my poster after looking at these. I don't know why I've always felt restricted to illustration books, because I feel this book has helped my ideas develop just as much. This book displays good use of space too, and after looking through it I had a much clearer direction in which to go about my poster.

Here's the scan of my final Ranulph Fiennes. Looking fearless, ready to tackle anything with his ice axes and climbing gear. Im happy with this drawing, and feel it suits my style a lot more than the other one. All ready to get photoshopping now!

Potential stamp finals

At the moment, these are my final stamp designs. However Im going to have to see what the look like as a set when I've finished the poster and the postcards. I think the ones on the right are a little better, because of the hand made border aesthetic. The ones on the left just don't look quite right. Im glad i tried both methods though, as i know now what works and what doesn't. Now i just need to crack on with the other designs to see whether or not I can use these as finals.

Stamps.

Starting to think about stamps. Think the ones on the left are working out better for me. I wanted to achieve a sense of desolation and adventure in my pieces, so I think the idea of him being a super tiny person walking through the snow is working. Ive considered space, which was what i needed to do, and I've thought about scale. And hopefully it shows a sense of determination, because I think he is probably the most determined person on this earth! Will have to try editing them on photoshop and see what kind of outcome I get, but Im making progress.

Jon Klassen

Ive been researching how other illustrators go about working with the subject of snow. These two really stood out for me. Jon Klassen's work is both delicate and bold. I hadn't thought to use black and white at all, but think its really effective. Clearly a skilled image maker, with careful thought of line of sight value. Need to start considering these things too.

ICE

Slowly getting there with the ice. The idea is to have Ran in the poster with some ice, thats all I've got so far but I'm pretty set on this idea. If i can execute it well, i think it could work. The ice practice on the right is where I'm getting it i think. Watered down acrylic paint applied in layers. Im starting to consider working on white, in order to capture the clean look I want to achieve. I'll have to see if these ice paintings work on white though. Lots to do!

Sketchbook development

I went and got a load of coloured paper from the library shop in order to make my own sketchbook. Thought it was the best thing to do in order to get ideas down quickly, without trying to figure out how to show snow etc. Lots of ideas floating around at the moment. I really want to have ice in the final poster design, but I'm struggling to draw it. Its pretty hard. Need to just keep experimenting. Also a big fan of the penguin, especially after studying Sarah Maycock's work. Definitely want a penguin somewhere!

To do:

  • Practice drawing ice some more. See what other mediums i could use and then see what photoshop could add.
  • Start considering layouts for each format, and decide what i want and where.
