Illustration friday- SOAR

Decided i'd start doing illustration Friday as one of my responsive briefs, mainly because they should be quick to do. I'm usually much better at working with longer briefs, so its good to push myself to work quicker, and who knows, I might produce some totally new work.

My aim is to think of a few components I want in each weeks illustration, e.g. texture, shape, limited colour palette, sense of space, line of sight etc.

This weeks word was soar, and I knew I wanted to produce a digital image which had texture and shape as my main components.

I did a small amount of research for this on Pinterest, mainly looking for images that had texture in them, then I began to make some roughs of various ideas.

Research:

Ryo Takemasa

Louise Lockhart

Sketchbook development

Final

Illustration friday isn't something I wanted to do, I don't think it pushes me in the direction I want to take as an illustrator in the future, but I'm worried that I'm quite behind with responsive, so I need something I can do quickly. As long as I can add some essence of what i want to achieve in each image I don't mind doing it so much. Im pleased with the textures I created in this one!

Artist research after The London Illustration Fair

The London Illustration Fair was simply incredible. I can't believe how much inspiration it gave me. One of my favourite illustrators was there (I didn't meet him, but I met a man with whom he is in a collective with) and got my hands on some rather awesome zines.

This is the work of Daniel Jamie Williams.

His sketchbooks are so dynamic and interesting, and his style is completely unique.

In some ways I can relate it to my current work. The way his whole thought process is displayed on each page is exactly how I've been working in my visual journal leading up to the finals. My finals are crammed with as much surreal information as I could squeeze onto one page, and I love working in that format at the moment. Daniel Jamie Williams also works in this way, and its evident that he uses his sketchbook religiously. On the back of one of the zines it says " A zine of a sketchbook that I brought in Berlin during the summer of 2014 and drew in obsessively."
He's an inspiration for the visual journal.

What I will take away from studying his work-

- Draw all of the time. Draw through my own struggles. Draw because I love to draw.
- Vary the formats in which I draw. Draw big, draw small. Cram the pages, spread them out. Write on some pages, leave others. Try everything.
-  Take a sketchbook with me everywhere, you never know when the inspiration for the next brief is going to happen.

Megacrit

I was really happy with the positive feedback I got from yesterdays crit. A lot of comments on the composition and about how interesting my prints are to look at.
On the other hand, I don't feel like I was given any critical advice in order to push my practice forward. I mean its so lovely to hear such great comments after working so hard on everything, but a little advice is always appreciated.

Progress Review

Yesterdays talk with Ben really inspired me to get a move on! Really want my prints finished before christmas. Ive been faffing around with my animation and getting nowhere, so my aim is to now get my prints done first and hopefully spark some inspiration from doing this to take into my sting.
I need to -
-Do some artist research.
- Get my prints done before heading home. (I may stay an extra week to get this done)
- Think about ways to simplify my animation.
